What would the best version of you even look like? Think about that for a moment. “YOU TWO POINT OHHHHH!!!!!” Can you imagine how different you would feel becoming the best version of yourself? I’ll tell you that it’s not easy, but it is possible. I wonder how Superman feels. Decision making will be easier for you because the steps are simple. You’ll think I’m crazy they are so easy. But you will need some grit and determination to stick to them. Are you ready?
Let me begin by telling you this will not be an overnight process. Usually, this entire process takes about 21days. It’s up to you and how quickly you can create a habit of the process. Therefore, I suggest that you do it daily and as often as possible. If you are not following along, you will soon understand.
As we move through life there are things, we know we have to do, need to do, should do, and want to do. Like I have to get to a hospital before I bleed out and die. Or I have to do that report so I don’t get fired. These are things that are important and urgent. Then there is I need to. Think I need to buy some groceries, but I can wait until tomorrow. This is important because you need to buy food, but not urgent because you can wait until tomorrow. And then there’s should do. These are the things we tend to consider unimportant but somehow urgent and usually made as a split decision. The split decision is between should do and want to do. For example, you need to decide, should you eat that last slice of cake when you know you are on a diet? But it looks, smells, and tastes so good. You know what you should do. Walk away, right? But what do you want to do? Eat that cake. Here’s the crazy part. All you need to do is focus on doing the things you know you should do but don’t want to do. It’s that simple. The reason it works is also simple. By doing the things you should do, the things you have to do become scarce and the things you need to do virtually vanish. If you have ever thought, “I should really get up right now, but I don’t want to”, so you didn’t, then you understand what I’m talking about. Or maybe you thought, “I should quit smoking” but then didn’t. It is because you really didn’t want to.
So here it is, Step 1: Do the things you know you should do and not the things you want to do.
Don’t get me wrong. Sometimes what you should do and what you want to do will overlap and that is ok. What’s important is that you are still doing what you should do. Put the chips down. Start that business. Quit smoking. Read that book. Buy that rental. Let that grudge go. Whatever it is, if you know you should do it, then do it and do it now. As you know, tomorrow is not guaranteed, so do it now, today.
Now the second step is a bit more difficult. This is where that grit and determination I mentioned earlier will be needed. You will have to dig deep, focus, and be self-aware to recognize when the feeling hits you. That feeling when you’re stuck between deciding on what you should do versus what you want to do. When those moments come up (trust me, they come up more often than you think) do what you should do every time and every day for at least 21 days. It is hard but you are worth it. Whenever you think, “I should…” do that.
Here’s Step 2: DO the “I should…” and Do NOT do the “I should not…” for no less than 21 days, as often as possible.
WARNING: Sometimes you may find yourself thinking “I should… (something counterproductive, negative, harmful, distracting, etc.)”. Understand that these thoughts are really “I want to…” disguised as “I should… “, and you are trying to validate and rationalize inappropriately. Things like, “I should go watch TV for a few hours.” when you could be going to work on that project you should be working on. Transition those thoughts into “I should NOT… (something counterproductive, negative, harmful, distracting, etc.)” appropriately and then do that thought. Use this process as it was intended to be used, as a means for you to grow and improve in every measure of your life.
